The Somali Ministry of Defence has officially opened a new Media & Public Relations Centre in Mogadishu, dedicated to the late journalist Abdinasir Abdulle Ga’al.
Ga’al, a cameraman for Radio Somali National Army, was killed on August 14, 2019, during a car bomb attack by Al-Shabaab on a military base in Awdheegle, southern Somalia.
Minister of Defence, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, honored Ga’al’s bravery and dedication to Somalia through his journalistic work.
The newly established centre aims to enhance communication between the Ministry of Defence, the public, and independent media, promoting unity in safeguarding the nation’s faith, people, and sovereignty.
Ga’al, who was 24 at the time of his death, had been working with the Somali National Army Radio for three years.
He was on assignment in Awdheegle to interview locals about changes since the army reclaimed the town from Al-Shabaab.
His commitment to reporting from conflict zones highlighted the significant risks journalists face in such environments.
The inauguration of the Media & Public Relations Centre serves as a tribute to Ga’al’s sacrifice and underscores the importance of a free and secure press in Somalia.
