Dekedda Edge Through on Aggregate Despite Second-Leg Defeat

Khartoum, Sudan – Somalia’s Dekedda Sports Club sealed their place in the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup on aggregate, advancing despite a 2-1 defeat to Sudan’s Zamala Ruwaba in the second leg on Saturday.

Dekedda had entered the fixture with a crucial 1-0 advantage from the first leg, which they hosted at Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium last weekend due to Somalia’s lack of a CAF-approved venue.

Zamala Ruwaba came out determined in front of their home supporters, overturning the deficit with two well-taken goals to momentarily seize control of the tie. However, Dekedda showed resilience, pulling one back late in the match to make it 2-1 on the day and level the contest 2-2 on aggregate.

The precious away goal ultimately proved decisive, sending the Somali side through under CAF’s tie-breaking rules.

It marks a significant milestone for Dekedda, who continue to carry Somalia’s continental hopes despite logistical challenges and limited infrastructure. The club now awaits confirmation of their next opponents as they prepare for what will be another stern test on the African stage.

Team officials praised the players’ discipline and character, noting that grinding out results in difficult away conditions reflected a growing maturity within the squad.

Dekedda’s progression also offers a boost to Somali football, which has seen increased investment and international participation in recent years.

The journey continues — and Somalia’s flag remains flying high in continental competition.
