Demining Company from the UK to Train SNA Soldiers on IED

A demining company from the United Kingdom is to train Somali National Army (SNA) soldiers on Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).

The British firm, which is known as ISSEE, would provide the training as part of the UK government’s technical support to the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).

Through the support and training, SNA officers should be able to handle the increasing cases of IEDs being used against military officers, government personnel, and innocent civilians.

Reports indicate that the training would focus on demining, counter-terrorism, and IED-making equipment.

FGS awarded ISSEE the contract following recent talks between President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and Ben Wallace, the UK’s Secretary of Defense.

During the recent visit, Wallace confirmed that UK Armed Forces remains committed to building the capacity of the SNA in different areas.

“Thus far, our armed forces have trained more than 2,000 SNA soldiers to combat the threat posed by Al-Shabaab in not only the country but also the entire Horn of Africa region,” he said.
