Deni and Madobe Agree to Attend Mogadishu Talks on Somalia Polls

President Said Abdullahi Deni of Puntland and President Ahmed Islam Madobe of Jubbaland have agreed to attend the upcoming talks on Somali elections in Mogadishu.

Deni and Madobe were conspicuously absent from Dhusamareb III talks that ended a week ago.

The two leaders had expressed their misgivings regarding President Mohamed Farmaajo’s commitment to any agreement signed in Dhusamareb.

Instead, the two advocated for talks attended by an international guarantor.

Since Monday, Deni has been hosting President Madobe in Puntland’s administrative capital of Garowe as they discuss issues affecting the country.

On Thursday, the two leaders briefed the media on the outcome of their discussions.

In their press briefing, they promised to attend the upcoming talks on Somalia’s elections that are scheduled for late 2020 and early 2021.

Deni and Madobe had both attended Dhusamareb I and II talks with other leaders of the country’s Federal Member States.

International partners had expressed disappointment at the failure by the two leaders to be show up at Dhusamareb III talks where an agreement on electoral model was signed.
