Deni, Puntland Elders Hold Talks to Strengthen Security and Development

Bosaso, Somalia – Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni on Wednesday opened high-level consultations with traditional elders from Sanaag, Haylaan, and Bari regions, in a three-day summit aimed at reinforcing security, unity, and development across the state.

President Deni, accompanied by Puntland’s regional parliament speaker Abdirisak Ahmed, underscored the urgency of coordinated action against the persistent threats posed by ISIS and Al-Shabaab militants. According to a statement from Puntland authorities, the discussions highlighted joint security measures to safeguard communities and strengthen cooperation between local leaders and state institutions.

The elders, representing influential constituencies across eastern Puntland, emphasized the importance of preserving unity during a time of heightened political and security challenges. They expressed readiness to work closely with the administration to consolidate peace and prevent extremist groups from exploiting clan divisions or weak governance structures.

Beyond security, the talks also centered on accelerating infrastructure and development initiatives across the three regions. Roads, education facilities, and health services were identified as top priorities for boosting stability and improving livelihoods. The government noted that progress in these sectors would serve as a bulwark against insecurity by providing opportunities for youth and fostering social cohesion.

The summit, which will continue for three days in Bosaso, is viewed as a pivotal step in Puntland’s broader strategy to strengthen governance, advance economic development, and ensure the region’s resilience against extremist threats.
