Garowe, Puntland – President Said Abdullahi Deni of Puntland has voiced concern over the deepening divisions surrounding Somalia’s federal structure, calling for unity and dialogue as the country approaches another critical phase in its political transition.
Speaking on Saturday during the opening of the 57th session of the Puntland House of Representatives in Garowe, Deni warned that ongoing disputes over the federal system threaten Somalia’s stability and progress. He said the time had come for leaders across all levels of government to move beyond political rivalries and work toward a shared national vision.
“The divisions over federalism continue to weaken our state institutions and slow the progress of rebuilding Somalia. We must choose cooperation over confrontation. The future of our nation depends on our ability to act together,” Deni told lawmakers.
The President highlighted the establishment of the newly launched “Somalia Future Council”, describing it as a crucial platform designed to foster consultation and consensus among political stakeholders. According to Deni, the council will guide discussions on power-sharing, governance, and preparations for the 2026 national elections, which are expected to mark a major step toward full democratic governance.
He emphasized that Puntland would continue to play a leading role in shaping Somalia’s political evolution, noting that the state has long been a champion of federalism and institutional development.
“Our responsibility is to ensure Somalia remains united, stable, and governed through mutual respect and constitutional order,” he said.
The opening session in Garowe was attended by cabinet members, regional officials, and lawmakers, marking the start of a parliamentary term expected to focus on economic reforms, security, and regional cooperation.
As Somalia navigates its transition period and ongoing security challenges, Deni’s call for unity underscores the delicate balance between regional autonomy and national cohesion—a balance that remains at the heart of Somalia’s state-building journey.
