Deni Wins First Round of Somalia’s Presidential Elections

The leader of the regional state of Puntland emerged victorious in the first round of presidential elections held on Sunday, May 15.

President Said Abdullahi Deni won the first round after garnering 65 votes.

Incumbent President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo came second with 59 votes followed by ex-President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire.

Mohamud and Khaire emerged with 52 and 47 votes respectively.

Ex-President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed then followed with 39 votes. He finished ahead of Abdirahman A. Warsame (15), Abdulkadir Osoble (12), and Addow Ali Gees (8).

Candidates who finished in the first four positions proceed to the second round of voting.

Legislators from both chambers of the federal parliament (328) voted in the elections.
