Displaced people in Somaliland have received more than 1 million liters of clean water from the UN-Habitat to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic around the country.
UN-Habitat mostly supplied the water to residents of two settlements located just outside Somaliland’s capital of Hargesia.
The two settlements, Ayaha IV and Jimcaale, are vulnerable because of the huge numbers of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) they contain.
Furthermore, UN-Habitat discovered that they lacked bulk storage containers for water, which is an integral item for drinking, cooking, and washing.
Consequently, UN-Habitat supplied the resident with hundreds of 300-liter containers.
UN-Habitat announced that the project was part of Hargeisa Urban Water Supply Upgrading Project’s COVID-19 Mitigation Intervention funded by the European Union.
Asha Ahmed, Head of UN-Habitat’s Hargeisa Office and its National Project Officer, encouraged residents to use the water to improve their hygiene and curb the spread of COVID-19.
The project is one among many that UN-Habitat has carried out in Somaliland this year to help vulnerable members of the society in Somaliland to enjoy clean environments.
