Domestic Flights to Resume in Somalia Next Week

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has announced plans to resume domestic flights in the country from next week.

FGS made these plans known on Thursday.

Domestic flights – and international flights – were suspended at the onset of COVID-19 in the Horn of Africa country three months ago.

The decision to suspend them was made with the goal of curbing the spread of the novel coronavirus in the country.

Mahdi Mohamed Guleid, Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister, made this announcement after the weekly meeting of cabinet ministers in President Mohamed Farmaajo’s administration.

DPM Guleid chaired this week’s cabinet meeting in the absence of President Farmaajo and Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire.

As the government publicizes its intentions to ease COVID-19 restrictions, the country continues to experience a surge in the number of positive cases.

Thus far, the East African nation has recorded 2,924 COVID-19 cases, which are mostly because of community transmission.
