Dozens Killed in the Latest Inter-Clan Fighting in Somalia

At least 23 people have died and dozens more suffered injuries in the latest inter-clan fighting in war-torn Somalia.

On Tuesday, residents and several community leaders confirmed these reports to Garowe Online.

Further, they said the deaths and injuries occurred when a number of rival militia from different clans clashed.

The fighting involved rival militia from Galmudug and Puntland, which are two of the country’s Federal Member States.

Reasons cited for the deadly fighting were conflict over grazing land. Clan vendetta was also listed as one of the reasons for fighting in the villages of Towfiq and Af-Barwaqo.

One of the elders from Towfiq, Mohamed Ali Elmi, said, “We have confirmed that at least 23 people were killed in the recent animosities between different clans.”

Moreover, multiple sources have confirmed that the situation on the ground remains tense and volatile, which increases the likelihood of further conflicts breaking out soon.
