DUBAI — Global logistics giant DP World confirmed on Tuesday that its operations at the Berbera Port in Somaliland will continue under existing agreements, defying the Somali government’s recent move to nullify all pacts with the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The statement comes amidst a sharp escalation in regional tensions. On Monday, the Federal Government of Somalia announced the termination of all agreements with the UAE, including defense cooperation and port concessions. Mogadishu accused the Gulf nation of undermining its national sovereignty, a decision sparked by a deepening security rift involving the war in Yemen.
The Trigger: Yemen and Sovereignty Disputes
The diplomatic breakdown follows an investigation launched by Mogadishu last week. Somali officials alleged that the UAE utilized its logistics network to transport a separatist leader out of Yemen via Somalia. This incident occurred as the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen faces internal friction, with tensions rising between major coalition partners Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
DP World’s Stance
Despite the diplomatic fallout, DP World remains firm on its $442 million investment to develop and manage the Berbera Port. In a statement, the company emphasized its commitment to the facility’s safe and efficient operation, highlighting its role in providing economic advantages for Somaliland and the wider Horn of Africa.
Regarding the political dispute, the company noted that inquiries concerning diplomatic stances or governmental decisions should be directed to the relevant state authorities.
A Shifting Geopolitical Landscape The UAE has cultivated significant economic and security ties with Somaliland, viewing the Berbera corridor as a strategic asset. However, the region’s geopolitical dynamics shifted dramatically last month. According to reports citing Israeli officials, Israel became the first nation to officially recognize Somaliland’s independence, a historic diplomatic breakthrough reportedly facilitated by Abu Dhabi.
This move has further complicated the relationship between the Federal Government of Somalia and the UAE, culminating in this week’s abrupt severance of bilateral agreements.
