Sakariye Sheikh Ali Arab, a driver operating between Mogadishu and central Somalia, was shot and killed by members of an armed militia group on Thursday for refusing to pay additional fee at an illegal roadblock in Hiiraan region. His murder underscores the persistent dangers posed by illegal roadblocks in the Hiiraan region of HirShabelle state. These unauthorized checkpoints, often manned by armed militias, have long been a source of violence and extortion against civilians.
In recent months, Somali security forces have intensified efforts to dismantle such roadblocks. In January 2025, the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) reported the successful removal of 16 militia-established roadblocks along the border between the Hiiraan and Galgadud regions. Additionally, the Federal Government of Somalia launched operations targeting illegal checkpoints in the Hiiraan region, aiming to restore security and facilitate safe movement for residents.
Despite these initiatives, incidents like the shooting of Sakariye Sheikh Ali Arab highlight the ongoing challenges in eradicating such threats. The complex security landscape in Hiiraan, marked by the presence of various armed groups and ongoing conflicts, complicates efforts to ensure the safety of civilians traveling through the region.
Addressing these issues requires sustained commitment from Somali authorities and continued support from international partners to enhance security operations, promote the rule of law, and support local communities affected by violence and instability.
