Drone Attacks in Southern Somalia Kill Senior Al-Shabaab Leaders

Drone attacks carried out today in Southern Somalia have killed several senior Al-Shabaab leaders, reports indicate.

The drone attacks targeted specific bases used by members of the Al-Qaeda linked group.

A soldier, who spoke to a military-owned radio station in the region, confirmed that two senior Al-Shabaab operatives were killed during the attack.

The soldier stated that the attack was carried out in Haway village and Sablale town, which are in Lower Jubba and Lower Shabelle respectively.

He said that the Haway drone attack killed Dahir Moalim, a senior commander of the militia.

Similarly, Al-Shabaab’s Ahmed Nur, who is a high-ranking official of the extremist group, was killed in the Sablale airstrike.

In the past, AFRICOM and AMISOM have carried out similar airstrikes against known bases of the militia.

However, it is not clear who carried out today’s airstrikes in the region.
