Drought Has Displaced 670,000 People in Somalia

Drought has left more than 670,000 people displaced from their homes in Somalia.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced this worrying statistic on March 9.

According to OCHA, the number of displaced persons in Somalia has shot up from 245,000 in December 2021.

A statement from OCHA attributes this trend to the search for food and water.

More Somalis are also leaving their homes in search of pasture for their livestock, especially now that the rains have failed again.

OCHA also mentioned that the drought has impacted close to 90 percent of Somalia’s territory.
