Drought-Resistant Sorghum and Cowpeas being Trialed in Boroma, Somaliland

Improved and drought-resistant sorghum and cowpeas are currently being trialed in Boroma, Somaliland.

The trial is a joint venture between the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Amoud University, and the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT).

The introduction of the new varieties of sorghum and cowpeas will help a region that experiences droughts frequently.

FAO indicated that the new varieties of sorghum and cowpeas are already in the hands of a few pastoral, agropastoral, and farming communities in Boroma.

Through this project, FAO hopes to nurture resilience livelihoods in a region that would otherwise drop deeper into poverty.
