EAC to Hear Somalia’s Application for Membership Later

The East African Community (EAC) has announced a delay in its hearing of the application by Somalia to join it as the newest member.

This was revealed after the Heads of State and governments from member countries held an extraordinary summit on February 27.

Heads of state and governments met virtually, as part of efforts designed to curb the spread of the deadly COVID-19 disease.

Upon meeting, it was announced that the heads of state and governments had not yet evaluated Somalia’s application.

Consequently, Somalia has to wait for admission a bit longer.

EAC issued a statement on the matter after Saturday’s extraordinary summit.

In the statement, EAC said that the “verification exercise” for Somalia’s admission into the regional bloc was yet to be undertaken.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta was elected as the new Chairperson of EAC.

He takes over from President Paul Kagame of Rwanda.
