Egeh Briefs ECA on Somalia’s Economic Reforms and Growth

Seville, Spain – Somalia’s Finance Minister Bihi Egeh held high-level discussions with Claver Gatete, Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), on the sidelines of the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4) in Seville.

The meeting focused on Somalia’s ongoing economic reform agenda and its alignment with the newly launched National Transformation Plan (NTP). Egeh emphasized the government’s commitment to implementing sustainable, inclusive reforms that promote domestic revenue generation, expand access to services, and drive long-term development.

Gatete commended Somalia’s progress in fiscal management, public financial transparency, and macroeconomic stability, highlighting the country’s recent debt relief milestone under the HIPC Initiative and its growing investor confidence.

Both parties explored ways to enhance Somalia’s partnership with the ECA to support policy implementation, capacity-building, and regional economic integration. The discussions also touched on fostering inclusive growth that benefits ordinary Somali citizens, especially youth and women, in line with Somalia’s Vision 2060.

“The Somali government remains fully committed to transforming our economy and delivering prosperity for all our people. This partnership with the ECA is vital to our journey,” Egeh said.

The Seville gathering brought together global finance leaders, policymakers, and development institutions to chart a path for financing the Sustainable Development Goals in fragile and emerging economies. Somalia’s active participation reflects its renewed engagement on the international stage.
