Egypt Reaffirms Support for Somalia at AU Peace and Security Council

Badr Abdelatty, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, has reiterated his country’s firm commitment to supporting Somalia’s stability, development, and territorial integrity during a high-level meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC).

Speaking at the session, Abdelatty underscored the importance of sustained regional cooperation in addressing shared security challenges, including terrorism, political instability, and climate-induced displacement. He called for enhanced solidarity among African nations to bolster peacebuilding efforts across the continent, particularly in fragile states such as Somalia.

“Egypt stands ready to work closely with Somali authorities to advance peace, promote development, and support national efforts for state-building,” Abdelatty stated. He highlighted Egypt’s longstanding diplomatic and security ties with Somalia, noting that Cairo remains a reliable partner in areas such as capacity building, counterterrorism, and institutional reform.

The Foreign Minister also called on the international community to increase support for Somalia’s government in its ongoing efforts to stabilize the country and complete its security transition, including through African Union-led missions.

The AUPSC meeting comes at a critical time as Somalia continues to face the dual challenge of rebuilding after decades of conflict while countering threats from extremist groups such as Al-Shabaab. Egypt’s statement signals continued regional backing for Somalia’s path toward peace and sustainable development.
