Egypt has delivered a supply of Small and Light Weapons (SALW) to the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS).
However, the donation has raised eyebrows, especially in Somaliland, considering that the arms embargo by the UN’s Security Council remains in force.
According to authorities in Somaliland and international observers, the donation of arms is a clear violation of the embargo.
However, Somalia’s Ministry of Defense has clarified that the arms would be purely for members of the Somali Security Forces.
The defense ministry has vowed that the arms are not for reselling, transferring, or availing to individuals who are not members of the Somali Security Forces.
Nevertheless, the government of Somaliland has expressed grave misgivings about Somalia’s inability to abide by the provisions of the arms embargo.
It has condemned the government of Egypt too for violating and enabling Somalia to also breach the terms of the embargo.
Somaliland has indicated that the breach of internationally imposed embargo could threaten the peace and stability in the Horn of Africa region.
