Election of Upper House Speaker is Underway in Mogadishu

Senate (Upper House) legislators are currently in Mogadishu to elect the new Speaker and Deputy Speakers.

The election of the Speaker and his deputies has already kicked off.

The legislators are conducting the exercise in Afisyoni, which is near the heavily fortified Halane Base Camp.

The exercise, which takes place on Tuesday, April 26 has attracted several candidates.

Some of the candidates include Salah Jama, the Minister of Constitutional Affairs, and a Member of Parliament (MP).

Others include Osman Dubbe, the Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism.

Abdi Hashi, the incumbent, has also joined the list in the hope of serving as the Speaker of the Upper House once more.

The successful candidate must garner votes from 28 out of the 54 Senators in the Upper House.

The process goes to the second round if nobody emerges victorious in the first round.
