Somali Government Announces Plans to Reduce Electricity Costs Nationwide

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Abdullahi Bidhaan Warsame, has introduced a broad government initiative to sharply lower electricity expenses for citizens across the country.

In a recent interview, Bidhaan noted that steep current energy rates hinder growth and family well-being. He revealed the government’s pledge to collaborate with private power suppliers to reduce costs and broaden availability.

“The Federal Government of Somalia’s strategy ensures affordable electricity nationwide. We stand ready to assist power firms in reaching this objective,” Bidhaa said.

The minister cited achievements in Baidoa, where a fresh solar project was launched, delivering 7-8 megawatts with extensive battery storage for evening supply. This effort enabled the local provider to slash rates by about 40-50%, a blueprint for national rollout.

Bidhaan underscored affordability as vital for widespread access. He observed that numerous low-income households cannot pay for power, or restrict use due to high fees. The aim is electricity below 20 cents per kilowatt-hour in five years.

The ministry focuses on renewables, especially solar, as a sustainable and cheaper option over diesel generators. The minister urged collective action to overhaul energy systems, making dependable, low-cost power a catalyst for economic progress and better lives for Somalis.
