The Ministry of Environment and Rural Development (MoERD) has confirmed a significant drop in the poaching of cheetah cubs in the country.
A joint statement from the environment ministry and the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) on August 22 confirmed this development.
According to the statement, the ministry and CCF haven’t confiscated or intercepted any poached cub for the last 10 months.
Last year, between July and October, authorities arrested eight traffickers and rescued 13 cubs.
More importantly, Cabdiraxman Yusuf Mahdi, one of Somaliland’s most notorious poacher, was arrested.
The government has successfully prosecuted and jailed several Somaliland poachers in the last year.
With this news, CCF and the government seem to be changing Somaliland’s history and record as the hub of poaching cheetah cubs.
