An Estonian has been appointed to lead the European Union (EU) Embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia.
Tiina Intelmann, who formerly served as the Estonian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, begins her tour of duty in Somalia from September 2.
Prior to this, she had led EU’s Delegation to Liberia from 2014-2017. Additionally, Intelmann has also worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Estonia from 1991.
She now becomes the third Estonian to lean an EU embassy in a foreign territory.
Others who have occupied similar positions from her country of origin include Matti Maasikas and Riina Kionka. Maasikas was the EU Ambassador to Ukraine while Kionka was EU Ambassador to South Africa.
EU has a vibrant presence in the East African nation.
Ambassador Intelmann takes over from Nicolas Berlanga who recently concluded his three-year tenure as EU Ambassador to Somalia.
