Ethiopia Ambassador Visits HQs of Somaliland Army for Talks on Increased Security Cooperation

Brigadier General Niman Yusuf Osman, the Commander of the Somaliland National Army, and H.E. Teshome Shunde, the Ethiopian Ambassador to Somaliland, met at the headquarters of the Somaliland Armed Forces for discussions on enhanced security cooperation.

Their meeting underscores the importance of diplomatic and security ties between Somaliland and Ethiopia.

Both parties explored avenues for joint efforts in combating terrorism, human trafficking, and other transnational threats that affect the region.

Ethiopia, with its relatively stronger military infrastructure, offered training programs or technical assistance to the Somaliland National Army to enhance its operational capabilities.

They both agreed on the need for strengthening intelligence-sharing mechanisms to preempt and respond to security threats more effectively.

The discussions also touched on broader regional security issues, including the situation in Somalia and the Red Sea region, where both Somaliland and Ethiopia have strategic interests.

While the primary focus was on security, they also laid the groundwork for discussions on economic cooperation, given Somaliland’s strategic location and Ethiopia’s need for access to seaports.

This meeting reflects Somaliland’s ongoing efforts to bolster its international partnerships, despite its lack of formal recognition as an independent state by the international community. F

or Ethiopia, engaging with Somaliland aligns with its strategic interests in securing access to the Red Sea and maintaining stability in the region.
