Ethiopia Awaits Official Communication from Somalia on Troops Withdrawal

Ethiopia says that it has not received any official communication from Somalia on the withdrawal of its forces.

A statement from the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs shows that Ethiopia is yet to receive any communication from Somalia on this matter.

Recently, Somalia stated that it would not allow Ethiopia to be part of the multinational force that will take over from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) from next year.

ATMIS is scheduled to pull out its troops from Somalia completely by December 31, 2024.

A multinational force would then take over.

For years, Ethiopia has deployed its troops in Somalia as part of the ATMIS contingent.

However, it also has several non-ATMIS troops in Somalia.

Nebiyu Tedla, the spokesperson of Ethiopia’s foreign affairs ministry, said that the government was yet to be briefed on this development by Somalia.

He added that discussions on post-ATMIS force were yet to kick off.
