Ethiopia Closes Border with Somaliland over COVID-19 Fears

The government of Ethiopia announced the closure of the country’s border with Somaliland over growing COVID-19 fears.

The announcement came via the Ethiopian authorities in Togwajale, a border township linking the two Horn of Africa nations.

Through the Wednesday announcement, Ethiopia said it had banned any movement along the border, especially that of people traveling from Somaliland into the country.

Nevertheless, authorities said that the ban does not apply on basic food commodities, which includes fruits, vegetables, and khat.

Ethiopia has deployed its military to the region to enforce the directive. Soldiers are allowed to patrol the area and arrest anyone trying to move between the two nations illegally.
