Ethiopia Denies Somaliland Recognition

The government of Ethiopia has denied reports that it has offered Somaliland the much-needed international recognition.

Dina Mufti, a spokesperson at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced that the country is not about to recognize Somaliland’s independence from Somalia.

Somaliland broke free from Somalia in 1991.

In the last month, it has announced plans to establish diplomatic ties with Taiwan to the chagrin of both Somalia and China.

Similarly, Ethiopia and Egypt have both dispatched high-powered delegations to Hargeisa to meet with President Muse Bihi Abdi.

Ethiopia and Egypt have not been at peace with each other because of the former’s plans to construct the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam along River Nile.

Mufti said, “It is our belief that Somaliland and Somalia are one and the same nation. Therefore, we refute any news that Ethiopia has offered Somaliland the recognition it seeks.”

Spokesperson Mufti went on to clarify that Ethiopia respects Somalia’s unity and sovereignty and will continue to treat all Somalis as one.

Ethiopia remains one of Somaliland’s most loyal partners, especially during TPLF’s reign. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed seems to have gravitated towards Somalia though.
