Ethiopia Protests Egypt’s Plans to Establish a Military Base in Somaliland

On Friday, the Ethiopian government voiced its concern over Egypt’s plans to set up a military base in Somaliland.

Through Dina Mufti, the spokesperson at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government expressed displeasure at the news.

Mufti said, “Egypt is free to build and strengthen diplomatic ties with any country in East Africa. However, it must not do so at the expense of Ethiopia’s interests.”

The minister warned that Ethiopia would not take kindly to plans or projects that could create instability within the country.

He stated that Egypt’s decision to set up the base was a crossing the “red line” for Ethiopia and that the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed respond appropriately.
