Ethiopian Birr has been in circulation in Galkayo, a city located in north-central Somalia.
According to a local journalist reporting from the region, Ethiopian Birr has become the currency of choice for most residents of Galkayo.
It was reported that the residents no longer use Somali Shilling.
A wedding held in the city on February 5 saw guests gifted 200 Ethiopian Birr, which is the equivalent of US$5.
Galkayo, the administrative capital of Puntland, was the scene of violent protests towards the end of last year as residents showed their displeasure at the lack of Somalia Shilling (SOS).
The protests were also because of a decision by President Said Abdullahi Deni ordering import and export taxes to be paid in only US$ rather than Somalia Shillings.
