EU and Egypt Call for Greater Global Backing to Stabilize Somalia

Brussels, Belgium – The European Union and the Government of Egypt have jointly called on the international community to step up support for Somalia, underscoring the urgent need for sustained global cooperation to bolster the country’s fragile stabilization process.

In a joint statement released after high-level consultations in Brussels, both sides reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to Somalia’s state-building agenda, security sector reform, and military capacity enhancement. They emphasized that Somalia’s long-term peace and stability depend on the collective responsibility of international partners and the engagement of new donors willing to invest in the country’s future.

EU officials praised Egypt’s growing involvement in regional peace initiatives and welcomed Cairo’s intention to join the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). The move, they said, reflects Egypt’s readiness to contribute to counterterrorism efforts and peacekeeping operations aimed at consolidating gains made by Somali forces and their partners.

The discussions also touched on the ongoing threat of Al-Shabaab, which continues to carry out deadly attacks across Somalia, posing a serious risk not only to national stability but also to the wider Horn of Africa. Both the EU and Egypt expressed deep concern over the group’s resilience and its ability to exploit insecurity for political and economic gain.

European diplomats reiterated that Somalia’s recovery remains a test of the international community’s commitment to sustainable peace in Africa. They urged stronger coordination among donors, enhanced humanitarian assistance, and accelerated investments in governance and local reconciliation initiatives.

Egyptian representatives echoed these sentiments, noting that Somalia’s stability is vital to regional security and the Red Sea corridor. They reaffirmed Cairo’s support for the Somali government’s efforts to build professional security institutions and to advance the fight against terrorism through African-led mechanisms.

As Somalia navigates a crucial period marked by security transitions and institutional reforms, both the EU and Egypt stressed that the country must not be left to face its challenges alone. They called for renewed unity among global partners to ensure that Somalia’s progress toward peace, development, and sovereignty remains irreversible.
