EU Boosts Somalia’s Digital Transformation with New IT Support for Key Ministries

Mogadishu, Somalia — The European Union on Monday deepened its partnership with Somalia by handing over a major consignment of modern IT equipment to three key government institutions — the Ministries of Justice, Defence, and Internal Security. The initiative, supported through the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), aims to strengthen institutional capacity, improve governance, and accelerate the country’s transition toward a more efficient, technology-driven public service.

The handover, led by EU Ambassador Francesca Di Mauro, comes at a time when Somalia is working to rebuild its governance systems and modernize public administration after decades of instability. The new digital tools are expected to streamline internal communication, improve data management, and enhance coordination across the justice, security, and defence sectors — areas that are central to Somalia’s national recovery and reform agenda.

Officials say the initiative will not only boost transparency and accountability but also improve the government’s ability to deliver timely and reliable services to citizens. For institutions that have long struggled with limited resources and outdated infrastructure, the investment marks a meaningful step toward modernization.

With UNOPS facilitating the implementation, the project underscores the growing confidence of international partners in Somalia’s reform efforts. The EU’s support also aligns with broader goals to promote peacebuilding, good governance, and digital inclusion across the Horn of Africa.

For many civil servants and ordinary citizens, this initiative represents more than just new computers or servers — it signals a tangible move toward a more capable, connected, and responsive government that can better meet the needs of its people.
