EU Envoy Pledges Stronger Partnership with Somalia

Mogadishu, Somalia – The newly appointed European Union Ambassador to Somalia, Francesca Di Mauro, has vowed to strengthen ties between the EU and Somalia, with a particular focus on advancing security and economic development.

Her remarks came on Wednesday after formally presenting her Letters of Credence to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud at Villa Somalia in Mogadishu. Amb. Di Mauro underscored the EU’s long-standing partnership with Somalia, noting that the bloc remains committed to supporting stability, governance reforms, and opportunities for young people.

“The European Union stands alongside Somalia in its journey toward peace and prosperity. We will continue to support efforts that create jobs, enhance security, and empower Somali youth to be drivers of development,” Amb. Di Mauro said.

President Mohamud welcomed the new envoy and praised the EU’s consistent role in backing Somalia’s state-building agenda. He emphasized that Somalia’s priorities—ranging from counterterrorism operations to economic recovery—align closely with EU support programs already underway.

The EU has been one of Somalia’s key partners in areas such as humanitarian assistance, institutional reforms, infrastructure development, and the fight against terrorism. Over the past decade, the bloc has also funded programs aimed at job creation and education to reduce the drivers of instability.

Amb. Di Mauro’s appointment comes at a critical moment as Somalia continues to recover from years of conflict, climate-related shocks, and economic challenges. Her focus on youth empowerment is expected to resonate strongly in a country where more than 70 percent of the population is under the age of 30.

Observers say her arrival signals continuity in EU engagement but also an opportunity to recalibrate support toward long-term stability and economic resilience.
