Nicolas Berlanga, the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Somalia urged the country’s National Security Council (NSC) to solve the elections impasse fast.
Berlanga encouraged members of the NSC, which include Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS), to convene a meeting as soon as possible.
Specifically, he asked both sides to convene the meeting this week.
The EU Ambassador to Somalia made these comments on the first day of the Somali Partnership Forum (SPF) on Monday, December 7.
His comments come at a time of great confusion in Somalia.
The opposition has threatened to boycott the elections and organize their own if the government continues to ignore their concerns.
Jubbaland and Puntland leaders, President Ahmed Madobe and President Said Abdullahi Deni respectively, have also voiced their dissatisfaction with the electoral preparations.
The criticism facing the government mostly has to do with the composition or membership of the Federal Interim Electoral Team (FIET).
They accuse the government of filling the electoral body with National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) officers, civil servants, and government loyalists.
