Baidoa, Southwest – The European Union’s Ambassador to Somalia, Francesca Di Mauro, met with Southwest State President Abdiasis Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen in Baidoa, as the bloc works to reinforce its support for security and development in the region.
The Monday meeting at the presidential palace addressed various matters, including the security landscape, humanitarian requirements, and continuing EU-supported reconstruction projects.
A statement from the Southwest State administration indicated that both parties committed to bolstering cooperation and accelerating ongoing development programs in the state.
Southwest State, among Somalia’s most densely populated and vital regions, has endured significant conflict, displacement, and recurring droughts, positioning it as a key target for global assistance.
At a press conference following the discussions, Amb. Di Mauro explained that her initial visit to Somalia’s federal member states since assuming her role was intended to evaluate on-the-ground conditions and connect directly with local leaders.
She characterized EU-funded initiatives in Southwest State as impressive and robust, emphasizing efforts in humanitarian aid, infrastructure restoration, and governance enhancement.
She further mentioned that the talks addressed Somalia’s political direction and preparations for the nation’s forthcoming elections, which global partners view as a pivotal challenge for stability.
The EU envoy reported productive engagements with President Laftagareen and regional parliament speaker Ali Faqi.
She subsequently visited multiple EU-backed programs providing sustainable support for internally displaced persons and fostering business opportunities for at-risk groups. The EU remains a reliable ally to Southwest State and Somalia’s people.
