EU Envoy Warns Somalia against Arresting and Jailing Journalists

Nicolas Berlanga, the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Somalia, has warned authorities in the country against arresting and detaining journalists.

Ambassador Berlanga said this on Monday December 7 during the first day of the Somali Partnership Forum (SPF) in Mogadishu.

He told Somali leaders that the country’s international partners would no longer accept such incidences.

Berlanga said that journalists must be given space to perform their professional jobs without intimidation or frustration.

Somalia has been ranked one of the worst countries for journalists.

Each year, tens of journalists are arrested and arraigned in court. Authorities also deny them freedom to work.

Several of them have lost their lives at the hands of police officers and other security officers working at the biding of the government.
