EU Envoy’s Port Visit Sparks Optimism for Major Infrastructure Boost in Somalia

Mogadishu, Somalia — The Manager of the Mogadishu Port Authority, Amb. Mohamed Ali Nur Americo, has hailed the recent visit by European Union Ambassador to Somalia, Francesca Di Mauro, as a turning point for the country’s maritime infrastructure and broader economic ambitions.

Speaking during a press conference at his office on Thursday, Amb. Americo underscored the strategic importance of the EU delegation’s tour of Mogadishu’s main seaport, calling it “a powerful signal of renewed international confidence in Somalia’s economic potential.”

He expressed optimism that the visit would pave the way for expanded collaboration and financial support from key EU institutions, including the European Investment Bank (EIB) and EU Partnerships. According to Amb. Americo, the discussions focused on upgrading port facilities, enhancing cargo handling capacity, and modernizing logistics systems to meet global standards.

“This is not just about infrastructure—it’s about positioning Somalia as a competitive player in regional trade. With the EU’s support, we are confident that Mogadishu Port can become a major gateway for commerce across the Horn of Africa,” Amb. Americo.

Amb. Di Mauro’s presence marked one of the highest-profile visits by EU officials to the port in recent years. The EU has been a longstanding partner in Somalia’s governance, security, and development sectors, but direct engagement in large-scale economic infrastructure has been limited.

Port officials believe EU-backed investments could accelerate job creation, boost customs revenue, and reduce logistical bottlenecks that currently limit trade efficiency. Plans under discussion reportedly include new container terminals, digital systems for port management, and improved maritime safety mechanisms.

If realized, the initiative could significantly bolster Somalia’s aspirations to transform Mogadishu into a regional trade hub connecting East Africa to Middle Eastern and Asian markets.

Amb. Americo concluded by urging continued dialogue and swift action.

“Somalia is ready. Our partners are here. Now is the time to build,” the Mogadishu Port chief said.

Further announcements on concrete funding commitments are expected in the coming months.
