Mogadishu, Somalia – The European Union has announced €250,000 in humanitarian assistance to support the Somalia Red Crescent Society (SRCS) as it battles the effects of compounding crises across the country. The funding aims to strengthen emergency relief operations responding to prolonged drought, climate shocks, and the erosion of vital services that have left millions in distress.
Somalia remains one of the countries most affected by extreme weather and environmental degradation, with communities facing recurring droughts that have devastated crops, livestock, and livelihoods. The situation has been further compounded by flooding, displacement, and the gradual breakdown of essential infrastructure such as health and water systems.
According to the EU, the aid will enable the SRCS to deliver urgent assistance to those most in need, including access to clean water, healthcare, and emergency supplies. The support will also enhance the organization’s capacity to respond swiftly to emerging humanitarian needs, particularly in hard-to-reach areas where the impact of climate change and insecurity is most severe.
For decades, the Somalia Red Crescent Society has been a key humanitarian actor, providing lifesaving services in the face of recurring crises. The EU’s contribution underscores its continued commitment to supporting Somali communities in their struggle for resilience and recovery amid escalating humanitarian challenges.
With millions still at risk due to drought and economic instability, the new funding represents both a lifeline and a call for sustained international solidarity with Somalia’s most vulnerable.
