EU Grants €250,000 to Support Drought-Affected Families

Mogadishu — The European Union (EU) has announced a €250,000 humanitarian aid package to support vulnerable families affected by the severe and prolonged drought that has gripped Somalia since 2022.

The funding will provide lifesaving assistance, including access to clean water, healthcare services, and emergency shelter, as the humanitarian crisis worsens due to consecutive failed rainy seasons.

According to humanitarian agencies, millions across Somalia face food insecurity and malnutrition as water sources dry up and agricultural output dwindles. Many vulnerable communities have been forced to leave their homes in search of water and pasture for their livestock, compounding an already complex humanitarian emergency.

The EU’s humanitarian funding will help relief agencies deliver critical support to those most in need. The €250,000 allocation will focus on increasing water supplies to drought-affected villages, deploying mobile health clinics to reach isolated areas, and ensuring safe shelter for displaced families.

This latest support underscores the EU’s commitment to helping Somalia navigate one of its most difficult humanitarian challenges. It also reinforces international calls for sustained action to address the underlying drivers of recurrent drought and food insecurity in the region.

As failed rainy seasons persist, aid agencies have warned that without scaled-up intervention, humanitarian needs will continue to rise, especially among women, children, and the elderly who bear the brunt of this crisis.
