European Union (EU) lawmakers have come to the rescue of a Somali man who has been accused and convicted of human trafficking to fight his sentence.
They have rallied behind Mohamed Hanad Abdi, a Somali migrant.
Abdi was sentenced to 142 years behind bars in 2021. He was found guilty of making a deadly crossing from Turkey to Lesbos, a Greek island.
In his defense, Abdi said that a Turkish smuggler abandoned the dinghy they were traveling in.
Therefore, he took control to steer the dinghy to safety.
