Mogadishu, Somalia — The European Union launched a new platform for media engagement in Somalia on Thursday, with Ambassador Francesca Di Mauro hosting the country’s first “Meet the EU Ambassador” event in Mogadishu.
The gathering brought together Somali journalists from diverse outlets to exchange views on the EU’s priorities in Somalia and to chart ways for closer collaboration with the media. According to the EU Delegation, the initiative seeks to build a continuous dialogue, positioning the press as a central partner in telling Somalia’s evolving story while promoting openness and accountability.
Amb. Di Mauro emphasized that independent journalism is essential in advancing public debate, countering misinformation, and fostering democratic values. She noted that the EU sees Somali media as a bridge between communities, institutions, and international partners.
The event provided an open forum where reporters asked questions about EU development programs, peacebuilding efforts, and humanitarian support. Journalists also raised concerns about press freedom, safety, and the challenges of covering conflict and governance issues in the country.
The EU has long been one of Somalia’s key partners, supporting state-building, security sector reform, and humanitarian relief. By engaging directly with the media, the bloc aims to deepen transparency around its activities and create a shared space for dialogue with Somali citizens through their press.
Organizers said the “Meet the EU Ambassador” initiative will not be a one-off event but the beginning of regular exchanges with Somali journalists. The EU hopes the platform will strengthen mutual understanding and help ensure that Somali voices remain at the center of the country’s development and peace agenda.
