EU Promises Somalia a Donation of €27m to Fight COVID-19

The European Mission in Somalia has promised to fund the country with up to €27 million to help it fight COVID-19. Somalia needs the money to conduct an effective fight to limit exposure to Coronavirus, which has killed over 120,000 people worldwide.

Nicolas Berland, the EU Envoy for Somalia, said, “Jutta Urpilainen, the EU Commissioner for International Partnership spoke with President Farmaajo on phone to pledge financial support to boost the country’s fight against COVID-19.”

Somalia has been hit hard by the pandemic, which has rocked global economy and forced many countries to embrace lockdown as one of the measures aimed at curbing its spread. The Horn of Africa nation has also instituted measures designed to keep COVID-19 at bay.

Thus far, the East African country has confirmed 22 COVID-19 cases. One patient has died while one other has recovered. Somalia has banned international and domestic flights to curb the spread of the virulent disease in the country.
