EU Training Mission Celebrates 16 Years of Partnership with Somalia

MOGADISHU — The European Union Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM Somalia) recently commemorated its 16th anniversary, highlighting a steadfast, long-term commitment to developing capable, professional, and accountable Somali Security Forces. Since its formal launch on April 7, 2010, the international mission has served as a critical cornerstone in the advancement of the nation’s defense sector.

Scaling Up Tactical Preparedness

Currently operating under its ninth mandate—which the European Union recently extended through February 2027 to ensure sustained stability—EUTM Somalia delivers vital strategic advisory support, expert mentoring, and specialized capacity-building programs that are explicitly aligned with the Federal Government’s long-term security priorities.

Over the past year, the mission has drastically scaled up its operational tempo. Recent internal data released for the anniversary demonstrates a massive 68 percent rise in specialized training courses conducted in 2025 alone. Furthermore, the mission reported a staggering 90 percent increase in active Somali trainees compared to the previous mandate period.

This substantial operational growth reflects both an expanded programmatic scope and deeply enhanced coordination with Somalia’s broader network of international defense partners. Following a recent change in mission command in Mogadishu, EUTM Somalia has consistently adapted its training curriculum to precisely meet evolving Somali defense requirements. This flexibility directly supports the national strategy for seamlessly transferring ultimate security responsibilities to local forces ahead of the African Union’s phased drawdown.

One Team, One Loop, One Mission

Operating under the guiding principle of “One Team, One Loop, One Mission,” the European Union continues to lay the essential groundwork for sustainable, locally managed security solutions. The advanced training framework places heavy emphasis on developing future Somali trainers, strategically advising national command structures, and ensuring strict operational adherence to international legal standards.

The practical impact of these robust programs is already being felt on the ground. For instance, EUTM-S recently launched highly specialized courses for SNA officers at the General Dhagabadan Training Centre focused entirely on the Military Decision-Making Process (MDMP), equipping frontline commanders with crucial operational planning methodologies.

As the Somali National Armed Forces intensify their localized, kinetic operations against entrenched Khawaarij militants, the advanced tactical awareness and leadership skills cultivated by EUTM Somalia remain absolutely crucial for maintaining battlefield dominance and achieving lasting territorial stability.
