MOGADISHU — The European Union‘s representative in Somalia has endorsed the main opposition coalition’s decision to participate in a government-organized consultation event, characterizing it as a positive development for the nation’s political stability.
Ambassador Francesca Di Mauro communicated via social media that the Somali Future Council—an alliance composed of regional leaders and former officials—has accepted the invitation to attend the talks scheduled for February 1, 2026, in Mogadishu.
A “Constructive Step”
The Federal Government of Somalia had directly extended the invitation to the opposition group. Ambassador Di Mauro welcomed the Council’s acceptance following internal discussions, describing the move as a “constructive step.”
She further noted the necessity of creating a favorable political atmosphere to enable productive dialogue among all participants.
Conditions for Talks
The Somali Future Council has previously held significant disagreements with the federal administration, particularly regarding efforts to implement a “one person, one vote” electoral system.
While agreeing to join the upcoming consultations, the Council has stipulated specific conditions. Chief among them is the requirement that all modifications to the 2012 Provisional Constitution be halted immediately, ensuring that the discussions are built on trust and focused on tangible outcomes.
