EU’s Chief of Foreign Policy Urges Somali Leaders to Demonstrate Leadership

The European Union (EU) Chief of the Foreign Policy has requested Somali leaders to demonstrate leadership in the face of the mounting political challenges in the country.

Josep Borrell, who heads the Foreign Policy unit of the EU, made this request on February 8.

His comments were necessitated by the sentiments expressed by opposition leaders stating that they would no longer recognize Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo as the President of Somalia.

Farmaajo’s term as the President expired on Monday at midnight.

Borrell told the country’s leadership that inability to hold elections is “extremely serious.”

Consequently, he urged the leadership to continue with dialogue to agree on the best way of managing or implementing the national electoral process.
