Ex-Premier Says Unconstitutional Government Could Lead Somalia if General Elections are Not Held

Hassan Ali Khaire, a former Prime Minister of Somalia, warned that an “unconstitutional government” could lead the country if general elections are not held.

Ex-Prime Minister Khaire said this on December 24.

His comments come at a time of increasing anxiety in the country with the opposition threatening to boycott elections.

Somalia is scheduled to hold parliamentary elections by January 2021 after it failed to do so as initially planned in December 2020.

Presidential polls are set for February 2021, though even that might have to be postponed by a month or so.

Khaire was voted out of office in late July 2020 by the House of Representatives.

The former premier has been at the forefront in calling or timely parliamentary and presidential elections to avoid plunging the country into a constitutional crisis.
