Facemasks are now mandatory in Mogadishu as the number of COVID-19 cases keep rising exponentially.
Omar Filish, the Mayor of Mogadishu, decreed that facemasks are mandatory for all people in the capital city.
Mayor Filish made this decree on March 1.
The new rule takes effect immediately as the East African nation witnesses a surge in COVID-19 cases.
Since the turn of the year, Somalia has been reporting huge COVID-19 numbers.
Mayor Filish, who is also the Governor of Banadir Region, said that the area is the worst affected by the second wave of the virulent disease.
Since Somalia recorded its first case in March 2020, it has never made the wearing of facemasks mandatory to any of its citizens.
However, there are fears that the nation is trading on unchartered waters.
A statement from the Office of the Mayor ordered banks, shops, restaurants, service providers, and all businesses not to serve customers who are not wearing facemasks.
