Family and Human Rights Development Ministry Lists Achievements for February 2025

In February 2025, the Ministry of Family and Human Rights Development of Somalia undertook significant initiatives to promote women’s rights, combat female genital mutilation (FGM), and support individuals with disabilities.

One of the key events was the observance of the International Day for Zero Tolerance for FGM on February 11 in Mogadishu. The event brought together survivors, government officials, and international partners to advocate for the eradication of FGM. The minister in charge of this docket emphasized the severe health issues caused by FGM and called for legislative action to ban the practice, urging collaboration across society to protect women and girls.

Additionally, the ministry distributed food aid to 400 vulnerable families in the Banadir region as part of the Somali Women’s Week campaign while distributing over 100 wheelchairs to persons with disabilities. This initiative, conducted in collaboration with the Qatari Embassy in Somalia, aimed to provide essential support to impoverished communities during the holy month of Ramadan.

The ministry also hosted the first quarterly meeting of the Women’s Issues and Human Rights Consultative Council. The minister highlighted the importance of setting a 2025 work plan aligned with the National Change Plan and reiterated Somalia’s commitment to ending FGM through comprehensive collaboration.

These efforts reflect the ministry’s dedication to translating empathy into tangible impact, fostering a society rooted in equality, dignity, and compassion.
