FAO Launches Ground Truthing Survey Along River Shabelle

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has launched a ground-truthing survey along River Shabelle in Jowhar.

The survey would also spread out to other regions such as Balcad and Afgoye districts.

FAO announced that the exercise is crucial to identifying possible points along the river where it could burst its banks.

The organization opted for ground-truthing after high-resolution satellite images indicated that River Shabelle could burst its banks at 154 open points.

A Digital Elevation Model also pinpointed the exact locations that could break out and cause heavy flooding in the region.

FAO is scheduled to announce the results of the ground-truthing exercise later.

The results are crucial for planning timely and humanitarian interventions along the most affected points.
