FAO Needs $138.4 Million to Assist Somalis in Distress

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) announced that it needs $138.4 million to assist Somalis who are in distress.

FAO says it needs $7.4 million of the funds under the Global Humanitarian Response Plan for COVID-19.

Additionally, it requires $131 million of the funds under the Humanitarian Response Plan for 2020.

According to the global organization, around 2.6 million people in Somalia need humanitarian assistance urgently.

It said some of the funds would go into protecting the livestock and related sources of food for around 4,380 households in pastoral areas.

Moreover, around 2,840 households living in farming areas also need humanitarian assistance.

FAO also announced that desert locust infestation could destroy around 360,000ha of arable land if effective solutions are not sought and implemented fast.

For the most part, FAO intends to work with its local partners to cushion the most vulnerable groups in Somalia by providing them with food.
