Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has predicted a multiplication of locusts in Puntland following the ongoing heavy rains.
The announcement follows the recent Cyclone Gati, which made a landfall in Somalia, especially around the coastal areas in Puntland.
Following the landfall, heavy rains hit the region.
Now, FAO has concluded that the rains would lead to a multiplication of locusts in the region thus creating more fear over a fresh invasion.
Desert locusts invaded Somalia and other countries in the Horn of Africa region towards the end of December 2019.
On Tuesday, December 8, FAO issued a statement saying that the locusts would invade the region afresh after noticing new breeds in various parts of the country.
FAO listed the places most prone to a fresh attack as Bosaso and Haafun.
According to the global organization, the heavy rains pounding the area created “fertile ground” for locusts to breed and multiply.
